Bad Breath

The foul oral odor (Bad Breath) is usually caused by a group of anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria that breed beneath the surface of the tongue and often in the throat and tonsil area. The term “anaerobic” literally means living without air, and in fact, these bacteria do not require oxygen to live. Please remember, preventing halitosis is always easier than treating it. By developing the right habits, you can effectively help prevent it.
  1. Eat foods rich in fiber – High fiber foods actually help prevent halitosis. Avoid eating heavily processed foods that contain refined carbohydrates such as cookies, cakes, sweets and ice cream.
  2. Use mouthwash – Some mouthwashes or oral rinses are effective at preventing bad breath. However, you should never use alcohol based mouthwashes because the alcohol makes the mouth very dry, which will actually make the problem worse.

  8. Breathe through your nose instead of your mouth – Try to address any snoring or sleep apnea issues that could be affecting your breath and causing dry mouth.

Zika virus: FG alerts Nigerians to restricts travel to Latin America

The Federal Government has issued an alert about the outbreak of Zika virus infection and directed that Nigerians, especially pregnant women, should be restricted from travelling to Latin America for now until the situation improves.
The government, which directed the Nigeria Center for Disease Control to include Zika virus diagnosis as part of ongoing efforts to manage the Lassa fever outbreak in the country, said anyone coming from any of the Latin American countries should be interviewed at the various ports of entry to ascertain evidence of Zika virus symptoms.
A statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs. Boade Akinola, on Friday quoted the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, as saying that “there is no single case of Zika virus infection in the country and there is no need to panic.”
According to him, the Federal Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the situation and update Nigerians of any other developments.
Adewole said, “The World Health Organisation has raised a global alert because the disease has affected about 23 countries in Americas especially in Latin America. At the moment, there is no cure or vaccine for Zika virus infection.
“The Federal Ministry of Health hereby advises a travel restriction especially by pregnant women to Latin America for now until situation improves. In addition, we have directed the NCDC to include Zika virus diagnosis as part of ongoing effort to manage Lassa fever outbreak in the country.

“Nigerians should be vigilant and report promptly any case of unexplained fever that lasts more than 48 hours, especially in those that travelled to Latin America recently, to health care professionals. Nigerians working at various ports of entry into the country should interview anyone coming from any of the Latin American countries for evidence Zika virus symptoms.”
The manifestation of Zika virus infection include mild fever, rash (mostly maculo-papular), headaches, joint pain (arthralgia), muscle pain (myalgia), loss of weight (asthenia), and non-purulent conjunctivitis.
The virus is also associated with higher risk of congenital malformations in newborn when pregnant women are affected. The diseases usually occur about three to twelve days after the mosquito vector bite.

Bird flu spreads to 18 states, 2.5m chickens affected: news Alert

Avian Influenza, popularly referred to as bird flu, is now in 18 states in Nigeria and has affected over 2.5 million chickens resulting in the loss of several billions of naira, the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science has said.
Avian Influenza or bird flu is an infectious viral disease of birds. While most Avian Influenza viruses do not infect humans, a few others like A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) have caused serious infections in people.
NIAS, which is the regulatory agency of the Federal Government for the regulation of all matters pertaining to animal husbandry in Nigeria, on Friday stated that bird flu was spreading so fast and as such all adequate measures to stop the spread must be enforced.
Asked to state the number of birds affected by the disease, the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, NIAS, Dr. Godwin Oyedeji, said, “By the last count, I think as of yesterday (Thursday), not less than 2.5 million chickens have been infected and over 700 farms have been affected nationwide. From one incidence in one state and moving to two states, it has increased and I think by now we are having it in not less than 18 states.”

Oyedeji, who spoke during a press briefing in Abuja, added, “In the Kuje area, here in the Federal Capital Territory, over 900,000 birds have been affected. This should not continue, and it is because things that should be done are not being done.
“If we cannot prevent wild birds that carry the influenza from overflying Nigeria and if the virus has come into Nigeria, then we can prevent, through good animal husbandry practices, the spread from one farm to the other.”
He noted that something was wrong somewhere, adding that the institute had gone to the field to ascertain what was not being done right by poultry farmers. www.punchng.com

Scientists unveil potential schizophrenia breakthrough

SCHIZOPHRENIA IS  a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.



Scientists pursuing the biological roots of schizophrenia have identified a potential factor - a normal brain process that gets kicked into overdrive - that could lead to breakthroughs in the prevention or treatment of the condition.
The result, accomplished by analysis of genetics, autopsy brain tissue and laboratory mice, is "going to be a game-changer" in terms of understanding schizophrenia and offering routes for treatment and potential for prevention, said Bruce Cuthbert, acting deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health, which helped fund the research.
An expert unconnected to the research, which was published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, said the study's conclusion was not yet proven, but plausible

Almost 1 percent of the general population will have schizophrenia at some point in their lives. They may hear voices or hallucinate, talk about strange ideas, or believe others are reading their minds or plotting against them.
Nobody knows what causes the disorder, so the new result offers a possible peek into a black box. 
The finding might pertain to "a very substantial fraction of cases, maybe most cases, even," said senior author Steven McCarroll, of Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The result links schizophrenia risk to a problem with a normal process that happens in adolescence and early adulthood, when disease symptoms often appear. That age range is when the brain trims back the number of specialised places on brain cells where the cells signal to each other, called synapses. The new work suggests a connection to schizophrenia when this process gets out of hand, deleting too many synapses.
"It's like you have a gardener who was supposed to prune the bushes and just got overactive," Cuthbert observed. "You end up with bushes that are pruned way too much."
The result does not mean that over-pruning causes schizophrenia on its own. It could promote the condition in combination with other factors in the brain, McCarroll said.
The work began with a genetic investigation. Previous analysis of the human DNA indicates more than 100 places that influence the risk of getting schizophrenia, but detailed biological explanations for those influences are very rare. The new work identified a risk gene and found evidence for the over-pruning idea.
Drawing on DNA data from 28,799 people with schizophrenia and 35,986 people without it, the researchers found that a gene called C4 can raise a person's risk by about 30 percent over that of the general population.
The gene comes in several forms, and researchers examining brain tissue found evidence that the forms that pose the highest risk of schizophrenia were also the most active in the brain. In lab mice, they found that the gene plays a key role in pruning synapses.
The study does not directly demonstrate that excessive pruning of synapses plays a role in schizophrenia, but the idea makes sense, McCarroll said. It ties together previous observations, among them that schizophrenia most often develops during youth and that patients' brains show unusually few synapses, he said.

Kenneth Kendler - a schizophrenia genetics expert at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, who did not participate in the project - said that the work presents an impressive array of results.



The evidence that C4 can raise schizophrenia risk is strong, he said. The proposal that it does so through excessive pruning of synapses is "plausible and interesting, but not yet fully convincing".
"We don't yet know [whether] their hypothesis is completely true," Kendler added, but the work is still "a pretty big deal".
If it is true, scientists can think about finding drugs that would intervene, McCarroll said. They might be useful to give when young people show symptoms that suggest they may be on the road to developing schizophrenia. And even after the diagnosis, such drugs might keep the disease from getting worse, he said.

Zika virus vaccine 'could take three to five years

Researchers call for new incentives for drug companies after outbreak of mosquito-borne virus spreads to 21 countries.


Researchers say developing a vaccine for the Zika virus - suspected of causing brain damage in babies - could take up to five years, as health experts called for new incentives for drug companies.
The Zika outbreak, which the World Health Organization says is likely to spread to all countries in the Americas except for Canada and Chile, follows the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which also caught health authorities off guard.
"We've got no drugs and we've got no vaccines. It's a case of deja vu because that's exactly what we were saying with Ebola," Trudie Lang, a professor of global health at the University of Oxford, told Reuters. "It's really important to develop a vaccine as quickly as possible."

Large drugmakers' investment in tropical disease vaccines with uncertain commercial prospects has so far been patchy, but the pace of the outbreak has demonstrated how quickly little-known diseases can emerge as global threats.
"We need to have some kind of a plan that makes [companies] feel there is a sustainable solution and not just a one-shot deal over and over again," Francis Collins, director of the US National Institutes of Health, said last week.
The Sao Paulo-based Butantan Institute, which is currently leading the research charge on Zika, says it plans to develop a vaccine  "in record time", although its director has warned this is likely to take three to five years.
British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline also told sources on Monday it was studying the feasibility of using its vaccine technology on Zika, while France's Sanofi said it was reviewing possibilities.
30 times more cases
Brazil's Health Ministry in November announced it suspected that links existed between the mosquito-borne Zika virus and a foetal deformation, known as microcephaly, in which infants are born with smaller-than-usual brains.
The WHO has described circumstantial evidence of the link as "suggestive and extremely worrisome".
Brazil has reported 3,893 suspected cases of microcephaly, the WHO said last Friday, over 30 times more than had been reported in any year since 2010.
The outbreak has prompted El Salvador, Eduador and Colombia to warn women to delay getting pregnant.

The disease's rapid spread to 21 countries and territories of the region since May 2015 is caused by a lack of immunity among the population and the prevalence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the virus, the WHO said.
The pace of the outbreak prompted Margaret Chan, the WHO's director-general, to call for changes in how the organisation responds to emergencies.

Everyone in both natural medicine and orthodox medicine agrees that Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg was correct when he discovered that the definition of a cancer cell is a cell with low ATP energy (Note: ATP energy, or adenosine triphosphate, are small molecules which are mostly made inside the mitochondria of every cell and they provide the energy for all cells. A cell with low ATP energy is very weak and isdefinedto be a “cancer cell”).

The truth is that even if cancer researchers could fix the DNA damage it wouldNOTcure the cancer!! It is hard to imagine a cell biologist who is so mathematically challenged that they think that DNA damage can block ATP energy in the cell. DNA damage in cells is intotally random places. But it would takeincredibly precise DNA damageto block the production of ATP. The theory that DNA damage causes cancer is mathematical nonsense.
Here is another myth: cancer patients assume that oncologists would jump at the chance to use a new drug which has a higher cure rate for cancer. However, the pharmaceutical industry wouldnever releasea new drug which cured cancer even if they accidentally found one.Curing cancerwould cut into the profits of the super-rich owners of the pharmaceutical industry. Nor would the super-rich owners of the major media (or public media) expose any corruption inthe cancer industry.
Another misconception the general public has is they believe that oncologists are looking for the protocols with the highest cure rates. This is nonsense. If oncologists told their patients to do nothing but drink a quart of purple grape juice every day; cure rates for cancer would skyrocket to almost 100% (instead of the current 2.1% 5-year cure rates).
What oncologist would get rich telling their patients to go to a health food store and drink a quart of purple grape juice every day (called the “Brandt Grape Cure” on this website)? Or what oncologist would get rich telling their patients to go to a health food store and drink a quart of carrot juice (with a little beet juice mixed in) every day? Both of these are excellent cancer treatments with very high cure rates.
What oncologists do sometimes, to hide their dismal 2.1% 5-year cure rate, is to give their patients a six-month cure rate (i.e. the percent of their patients who live for six-months after diagnosis). Oncologists know exactly what is going on.
Nor would any health insurance company be allowed to pay for a cancer patient who used carrot juice or purple grape juice. Health insurance companies are regulated by the state insurance departments. Proponents of The Alkaline Diet say that when we load up on excess amounts of protein, sugar, caffeine and other highly processed foods, our pH levels are thrown off track, our bodies become more acidic, and that can lead to weight gain and disease. Bona fide O's require "truly surrendering to the experience and not worrying about being judged," she says. But if you resist letting go, it's nearly impossible to be swept up in the awesomely authentic sensations.

O-vercome it: Amp up the trust and intimacy you need inside the bedroom by speaking up more outside of it, says Women's Health advisor Debby Herbenick, Ph.D., author of Because It Feels Good. "Being authentic about expressing who you are is the key to better sex," she says. Start small: Confide a secret or share an embarrassing story, and when he asks where you want to eat dinner, pick a place instead of saying "Anywhere is fine," says Herbenick. "Men and women who are emotionally close will have an easier time being honest with their partner about how sex feels for them—whether it feels good enough to lead to an orgasm," she says. Improve your bond during the day and you'll be more comfortable directing him "to the left, a little softer, now faster"—and ultimately letting yourself let go—when the lights are out.

Self-Consciousness
Some women put on bed-rattling performances because they're insecure about how long it takes them to climax or what it actually takes to get them there, says Vivienne Cass, Ph.D., author of The Elusive Orgasm. "They see these highly orgasmic women in movies and think that's the norm," she says. Meanwhile, men who watch porn—i.e., most of them—are used to seeing women get off in seconds, which adds to the pressure.
